New AiOs from Lexmark mark the focus for Lexmark in 2006

Issue #0603/2 - With the declared intention of targeting growth markets, Lexmark launches a four-function AiO with ADF and LCD.

In an attempt to reverse its ill fortunes in the market, Lexmark is pinning its hopes on expansion of products in the main growth area of the hard copy market – inkjet All-in-One.

Just before Christmas, Lexmark launched the X8350 AiO, a capable SOHO oriented multifunction device that allows printing, copying, scanning and faxing. In addition, the US market now has a cut-down model, X7350, which is identical in all functionality apart from its lack of memory card slots and preview LCD.

With maximum print speed of 25ppm in mono and 19ppm in colour, these machines still lack the speed of equivalent Canon and Hewlett-Packard AiOs but its preview LCD puts it into the league of the Hewlett-Packard OfficeJet 7310 with its preview screen. Neither Brother nor Canon have 4-function machines with preview screen and Epson still has no four-function inkjet machines.
This said, the range of pricing within the four-function AiO category (with preview LCD and Automatic Document Feeder) is huge – from just £94 to £284. Most amazing though is the fact that Dell’s Photo AiO Printer is essentially the same machine as the Lexmark X8350, including PictBridge, memory card slots and LCD, but costs less than half that of the Lexmark.

With consumables that also cost rather less than Lexmark, the Dell 964 blows the Lexmark X8350 out of the water with a long-term CPP that is nearly 20% lower.

Despite its high purchase price, it is easy to argue that the Hewlett-Packard OfficeJet 7310 is actually a better buy that the Lexmark in terms of value for money. It might cost 42% more to purchase in the first place than Lexmark’s X8350 but its long-term running costs fall some 7% lower over the three-year period printing 500 pages per month.

Value for money, though, comes as much in the form of higher print speed, built-in automatic duplex and networking facilities as it does in the lower overall running costs. Over a period of ownership, buyers attain considerably more for their money – and, there is the opportunity to expand the machine with a second paper tray, taking paper capacity to 400 sheets for extra productivity.

Currently only available in the US (with no guarantees yet of launch in Europe), the X7350 lacks memory card slots and preview screen but is otherwise identical.

Pricing of the X8350 in Europe is €199, with a $200 price tag in the US. The X7350 costs $139 in the US.

Note that for this level of machine, the mixed mono/colour CPP over three years shown in the accompanying table is calculated on the basis of 500 pages per month using maximum capacity supplies and takes into account any standard, or starter, supplies shipped with the device and also includes the cost of purchase. All prices are manufacturer’s recommended prices.
