Issue #0828/2 – This week, the UK saw a three-function mono laser All-in-One device priced at less than £50 on special offer for the first time. Xerox’s WorkCentre PE3119 was offered at a 63% discount, at £49.29 including tax, for a short period of time before reverting to the, still low, price of £56.75 inclusive.
As a print, copy and scan device, the WorkCentre 3119 is based on a Samsung mono laser engine that Samsung also uses, in its SCX-4200. The SCX-4200, however, tends to sell for about 38% more than the Xerox model – despite the fact that Xerox is buying the engine from Samsung!

Samsung SCX-4200Prices in Europe are very different!
Not only are heavy discounts hard to find but the prices are generally much higher than in the UK (between 35% and 75%). The Xerox WorkCentre 3119 stands out in particular because street pricing currently available in Germany appears to be way out of harmony with the competitors. While it can be bought for around £55 in the UK (equates to about €70 with conversion), prices in Germany appear to range from €266 to €286! This places the WorkCentre 3119 in Germany at almost three times the UK price.

To return to specifications, there are a couple of areas in which some of these MFPs stand out against the competitors.
Focusing on the Xerox Workcentre 3119 first of all, this machine carries a high specification of utilities and advanced MFP capabilities. For instance, it ships with PaperPort 10 document management software; will handle auto-fit, cloning, ID card copy, 2-up and poster copying; along with watermark and poster printing.
OKI B2500 MFPOki’s B2500 MFP is uniquely equipped with a front USB port, in addition to the printing interface, for direct scan-to and print-from functionality. This machine also ships with PaperPort but version 9 rather than version 10 and uniquely makes provision for manual duplexing.
Samsung (as the OEM of the engine) shares the print and copy features available on the WorkCentre 3119 - auto-fit, cloning, ID card copy, 2-up and poster copying, watermark and poster printing. This device ships with SmarThru4 document handling software. While not as sophisticated and capable as PaperPort, it allows scanned images to be edited and saved in a variety of image formats. It also allows the user to preset copy and print formats.
Xerox WorkCentre 3119Brother also ships PaperPort with its DCP-7010L and also makes provision for n-up and poster copying. The printer is equipped with a parallel interface in addition to the standard USB interface.
For the purchase price, especially those lucky enough to have bought the Xerox WorkCentre 3119 on the special offer in the UK, the WC3119 is an exceptionally well-equipped device at an exceptionally low price.
Next week we will check out the Total Cost of Printing of entry-level mono laser multifunction devices.
