Retail ‘Photosmart Studio’ from Hewlett-Packard

Issue #0607/2 - Large format photo printing is outside the capability or accessibility of the majority of digital camera users. Hewlett-Packard now has a solution that promises to open up large format printing to anyone with the creative flair to utilise it.

Complementing the Photosmart Express Station, is the Photosmart Studio from Hewlett-Packard, also targeted at in-store locations for users who wish to undertake creative digital photographic work specifically with output to large format print.

Photosmart Express Station
Although the Studios are already appearing in a selection of Wal-Mart stores and Sam’s Club locations (Wal-Mart membership store) across the US, following a pilot program in four outlets, potential locations for Hewlett-Packard’s Photosmart Studio could also include any location with a photographic interest: photo stores; office supplies stores; pay-for-print outlets; etc. Introduction to Europe, as with the Photosmart Express Station, is scheduled for the autumn.

Photosmart Studio allows users to create photo projects in-store themselves and to print the finished product on a Hewlett-Packard large format photo printer that comprises part of the Studio package. Enthusiasts could also make their own creations at home, just using the Studio as the source of large format prints.

Photosmart Studio Display

Users may wish to create posters, calendars, albums, CDs and greetings cards for display, sharing and giving. To speed up and simplify the process of creating albums, the system takes part of the concept used for some years in Hewlett-Packard’s Album Printing software, enabling up to 200 photos to be laid out automatically without the user having to arrange and crop individual photos on individual pages of the album.

Having completed the creation phase of the project (claimed to be possible in about 10 minutes) users may then collect their finished product within about an hour.

This new facility is a fantastic opportunity for the average householder to gain easy access to large prints of their own personal images and digital art creations for hanging as display items in their homes rather than relying on cheap, anonymous, mass-produced prints bought in the local mall or highly expensive fine art pieces.
