IDC market share research

Issue #0718/3 - Latest figures from IDC show the result of Samsung’s meteoric rise.

To back up and emphasise the information presented in the first two articles of this issue, IDC has kindly provided TCPglobal with market share data for Q1 of 2007. All printers and MFPs in both A4 and A3 formats are included.

Most remarkably, we see the Samsung brand in the number two slot for both mono and colour laser machines. This position has been achieved in just a few years from a standing start, with low cost hardware that has focused largely on the low end of the market, which is where we find the volume in terms of sales.

As indicated in "Hewlett-Packard and Xerox strengthening while Lexmark struggles", Hewlett-Packard is still the dominant figure in the market, holding the number one position in all three sectors. However, IDC sees Hewlett-Packard’s market shares as being lower than the 45% threshold that the company itself claims – a fact that in no way denigrates Hewlett-Packard’s phenomenal grip on the market.

In fact, in the inkjet market, Hewlett-Packard’s lead has strengthened significantly over the last few years, pushing Epson and Canon to well below 20% market share from around the 30% mark.

While Lexmark is currently managing to hang on to a place in the top five in the inkjet market, it does not figure in the top five for either mono or colour laser printers.

Colour Laser - Top Five Market Share

Mono Laser - Top Five Market Share

Inkjet - Top Five Market Share

As a result of its determination and drive, Brother has pushed its way into the top five in the inkjet market even though its has given way to the strength of Samsung in the mono laser market. I would fully expect to see Brother pushing Lexmark into fifth position in the inkjet market over the next year or so unless Lexmark can really get its act together and turn itself around.

Likewise, I would expect to see Brother muscling its way into the top five in the colour laser market, pushing Konica Minolta out of sight as Xerox also continues to strengthen.
