Issue #0212/1 - According to global research company IDC, worldwide shipments of PCs will have risen by only 1.1 percent this year. This is in sharp contrast to the 4.3 percent that IDC was forecasting as recently as June of this year. Reported in the Financial Times this week, this new figure apparently concurs with reports relating to sales of processors and chipsets. Although the worldwide recovery is considered to be slow, at least this year’s figure looks like being healthier than last year’s, when shipments actually fell by 5.1 percent. Looking forward to 2003, IDC has revised its expectations to a growth of 8.4 percent, down from its original 11.1 percent. Even this could prove to be optimistic.
