Dell turns up the heat at the low end of the colour spectrum

Issue #0513/3 - Check out the savings on Dell colour toners as prices are reduced by up to 25%.

Dell has, this month, increased the pressure in the ultra low-end colour laser printer sector by reducing the pricing on its colour toners again.

However, the toners for the two 3000 series colour machines are not reduced by the same amount. Although the 3100cn can take both sets of cartridges, the high capacity set will fit only the 3100cn and not the 3000cn.

A much higher reduction (25%) on the high capacity cartridges (against 2.6% for the standard cartridges) means that the nominal colour CPP of the 3100cn is now down to 5.28 pence from 6.48 pence (see accompanying table on page 4).

Because the purchase price of the 3100cn is only a little higher than the price of the 3000cn, the overall CPP is only 2.36 pence, 22% lower than the 3000cn. It also places it a massive 41% lower than the Xerox Phaser 6100BD (with a price tag 27% higher than the Dell), not to mention the comparison with the new Canon!

Not only are the Dell machines priced at the bottom of the pricing spectrum (only beaten by the new Canon), but the nominal and long-term Cost of Printing is the lowest available on the market.

This move is fully in line with Dell’s stated objective to drive excess profit out of the consumables aftermarket. As reported previously, the company has already taken this approach with integrated networking, offering printers that are network-ready straight out of the box. We are now seeing ever more aggressive action taken on consumables.

Here the message is clear – pay £21 more for a printer that will save £606 by the time 90,000 pages have been printed over three years!
