Canon has second thoughts

Issue #0514/2 - Canon has realigned its supplies prices to make the Laser Shot LBP-5200 ultra low-end colour laser printer a very competitive offering.

Following a query from CharisCo Printer Labs at the time of preparing last week’s TCPglobal, Canon UK has revised its pricing on the supplies for its new ultra low-end colour laser printer, Laser Shot LBP-5200.

Having not formally released the original price structure to the market, this review has resulted in the pricing for general release being brought “into line with competitive market pricing” prior to release.

Pricing of the black toner has been dropped by 29% and the colour toners by 26%. The price on the imaging drum, however, has been cut by 48%. All prices are now closely aligned to the supplies for Hewlett-Packard’s Colour LaserJet 2550L.

Note that for this level of machine, the mixed mono/colour CPP over three years shown in the accompanying table is calculated on the basis of 2,500 pages per month using maximum capacity toners and takes into account any standard, or starter, toner cartridges shipped with the printer and includes the purchase price.

In terms of Cost Per Page, the adjustment brings the nominal colour CPP very much into line with the machines from Hewlett-Packard, Konica Minolta and Lexmark but noticeably lower than those from Epson and Xerox. The nominal mono CPP is still a little higher than most.
Of most significance though, the overall result of the review is that long term Cost of Printing is now seen to be very competitive against the competition, assisted by the exceptionally low purchase price.

At 3.48 pence per page, the long term CPP of the Canon LBP-5200 falls below all but the two Dell machines and the rather surprisingly competitive Lexmark Optra C510.
