Issue #0705/2 - Bullet points outline the two most expensive devices in the group and the two most economical for which types of user.
- As we consider what this means overall, firstly we cannot ignore the fact that, to the user on the street, unless the nature of the printed material categorically demands laser output instead of ink output, the Hewlett-Packard Officejet Pro K550 is completely unchallenged on economy – by a very big margin.
- Secondly, as just noted, Canon’s Laser Shot LBP-5200 is unchallenged for economy amongst the laser printers – at all print volumes and regardless of mono to colour page balance. This printer therefore represents the best value low-end colour laser printer, especially if colour content is high.
- Xerox’s Phaser 6110, based on a Samsung colour engine, is the most expensive printer at higher print volumes, with very little advantage over very few competitors at low volumes. This printer is at its most economical for users with high colour content but low volume.
- Dell’s 3110cn, not cheap to buy in the first place and because of the company’s direct sales model where discounting is not accessible to customers, comes out very badly under all circumstances but particularly at low volumes and high colour content.
