Issue #0516/1 - Small offices and businesses will doubtless greet new low-cost multifunction devices from Hewlett-Packard and Oki with much enthusiasm.

Following the recent launch of the Xerox WorkCentre C2424, the world’s first colour MFP designed for, and accessible to the small office ("First entry level, sub-£2,000/€3,000/$3,000 colour MFP"), and the Oki C5510 MFP referred to last week, Hewlett-Packard has now launched a highly competitive colour All-in-One device that opens up this functionality to even the smallest of companies.

Issue #0516/2 - Further benefits to business printer users – many laser toner prices are reduced and it is not just an exchange rate adjustment.

Price cuts to a selection of consumables in the Hewlett-Packard range benefit European owners of business machines and colour users in particular.

Oki’s new European web site slightly better than the US site

Issue #0516/3 - Are European web designers better than US designers or are they given a better brief? Oki’s newly designed sites on each side of the Atlantic might suggest that to be the case.

Having now launched its new-look website in Europe, we can see that the design is slightly better than the site previously launched in the Americas.
Although the colouring and the look and feel are very similar between Europe and the Americas, the European sites are more user-friendly and do not use the unreadable blue-grey colouring for small text in the important product specifications and information areas. This colour is reserved for the home and corporate pages, mostly for banners and headline text.

Aiming to be friendly and helpful to users, the European sites use eye-catching animations and provide a greater level of technical explanation to users that the American sites do not offer. For instance, under ‘Drivers’, the European sites offer a ‘Technology Explained’ option, whereas the American site throws the user into a page that demands to know which model the user needs a driver for but provides nothing else.
Under ‘Technology Explained’, Europeans are offered information on a wide range of topics including: Reducing User Intervention; Oki printers have built in web servers; Reducing paper usage; What is Auto Colour Balance?; and What is Single Pass Colour Digital LED Technology? Animated graphics are used where appropriate to illustrate the explanations.

One further major drawback of the American sites however, is that, despite the launch of the new ‘global identity’, the old okidata.com URL is still being used even though the web site announces itself as ‘Oki Printing Solutions’.

Issue #0515/1 - Re-identifying itself, Oki wants to increase its presence in the printer market by creating an image specifically of a printer solutions provider.

Oki Data / Oki Systems, an Oki Electric group member, has announced that it is to change its identity as part of global repositioning exercise.

Issue #0515/2 - Using colour is vital in all forms of visual communication. Oki has undertaken scientific studies to help customers maximise the effectiveness of their materials.

Oki, second largest manufacturer of colour printers, has picked up the importance of colour baton from where it was left abandoned by Tektronix when the company was purchased by Xerox.
