200 million … and counting … from Hewlett-Packard
Friday, May 16th, 2003 - Posted in News | No Comments »Issue #0317/5 - Hewlett-Packard reached a milestone on May 14th as it celebrated shipping its 200-millionth ink jet printer. Although it is only 3 years since the 100-millionth celebrations, where the first 100 million took 15 years to complete (the 10 millionth was shipped 10 years ago), we’re not quite looking at another Moore’s Law situation but this does give us clear indication of the rate of growth experienced in the market.

Partly as a result of a progression towards ‘convergence’, and partly as a result of the need to survive, both copier industry and printer industry have been on a collision course seeking stability and longevity for the future. Each, in a desire to protect itself from the other, has been evolving in a way that brings it closer to the other. But, they have not met in the middle – doubtless there is further evolution and convergence to come although, as each dances around the other, there is unlikely to be a ‘merging’ for some time.
